Inland golf notes: Halfway through the high school boys season, league races are heating up. https://www.sbsun.com/2024/04/08/inland-golf-notes-halfway-through-the-high-school-boys-season-league-races-are-heating-up/ Mon, 08 Apr 2024 21:28:20 +0000 https://www.sbsun.com/?p=4250275&preview=true&preview_id=4250275 Spring Break marked the halfway point of a very busy high school boys golf season, and there are several league races worth following as play resumes. In golf, only league champions get an automatic bid into CIF Southern Section postseason play.

Big VIII League

King is undefeated in league play, but by the narrowest of margins, in its quest for a four-peat. On March 21 at General Old Golf Course, the Wolves hosted Santiago and nine holes of play were completed with each side shooting a 208 (+28). League bylaws specify using the sixth score as a tiebreaker, allowing King to win, 43-47.

Justin Gousikul led the Wolves with a three-over-par round of 39, while Chase Slarvin’s round of 43 broke the tie.

It also took a sixth-man tiebreaker to settle the match between Roosevelt and Norco after they finished tied at 209 (+34). Roosevelt stayed a match behind King after prevailing 53-62.

King will play their three toughest matches on the road during second round of league play, visiting Goose Creek Golf Club in Mira Loma for rematches with Roosevelt (Thursday) and Norco (April 18). Their rematch against Santiago will be on April 23 at Glen Ivy Golf Club, the same day that Norco and Roosevelt meet for their rematch.

Ambassador League

After sharing the league championship last year, Linfield Christian is off to an undefeated start in its title defense at 5-0.

The Lions defeated Woodcrest Christian 209-219 in their season opener at General Old Golf Course on February 26, and on March 13 prevailed 198-200 against Arrowhead Christian at Redlands Country Club.

Alfredo Guerra and Luke Bohmer were CIF-SS Individual Championship finalists a year ago. They return to try to lead the Lions to consecutive titles. Guerra shot a 38 in the win over Woodcrest Christian, while Bohmer carded a 40.

Linfield Christian will be at home at CrossCreek Golf Club in Temecula for rematches against Woodcrest Christian on April 17 and Arrowhead Christian on April 22 .

Southwestern League

Defending champion Murrieta Valley faced Great Oak on March 19, with the Nighthawks prevailing 205-212 at a windy Bear Creek Golf Club in the league opener.

Brayden Gilpin, Clay Yarboro, and Travis McSparran are all averaging 40 or lower for the Nighthawks, based on available scores through two matches of league play.

Murrieta Valley is 4-0 in league after a186-209 win over Chaparral, putting the Nighthawks a match clear of the Pumas and two clear of Great Oak. The Chaparral-Murrieta Valley rematch will be on April 23 at Murrieta’s Golf Club of Rancho California.

Citrus Belt League

On April 2, Yucaipa defeated Redlands 193-233 in the first of their two Citrus Belt League meetings and moved to 3-0 in Citrus Belt League play. They’ll face off again at Yucaipa Valley Golf Club on April 18.

Tyler Price shot a 33 to lead the Thunderbirds, while Seth Looy and Eli Gonzalez added rounds of 38 and 39, respectively.

Baseline League

Los Osos is undefeated in league play at 3-0 after a 194-230 win over Damien on April 1 at Sierra Lakes Golf Course in Fontana.

The Grizzlies have also posted a 191 at San Bernardino’s Shandin Hills Golf Course against Etiwanda and a 192 against Rancho Cucamonga to comfortably find themselves in first place.

Andy Yu leads the Grizzlies with a 36.5 nine-hole average, while Jonathan Nolasco, Noah Monsale, and Preston Brown are averaging between 39 and 40 shots.

Los Osos plays Etiwanda (Wednesday) and Rancho Cucamonga (Thursday) in its two biggest tests of the league season.

Palomares League

Claremont and Bonita are undefeated in league play at 4-0.

Claremont’s toughest match so far was a 202-214 win against Glendora at Glendora Country Club on March 19. Bonita posted a 218-232 win over Alta Loma for its closest win.

The two contenders will meet each other on April 17 and 18 at Marshall Canyon Golf Course in La Verne.

Will Middleton leads Claremont with a 35.7 scoring average, while teammates TJ Holstrom and Ethan Luna are posting 37.7 and 39 strokes, respectively. Bonita’s top player is Aaron Duran with a 37.3 average.

Chaparral’s Keelan Wright, Rancho Cucamonga boys relay teams shine at Arcadia Invitational https://www.sbsun.com/2024/04/07/chaparrals-keelan-wright-rancho-cucamonga-boys-relay-teams-shine-at-arcadia-invitational/ Sun, 07 Apr 2024 19:27:44 +0000 https://www.sbsun.com/?p=4249171&preview=true&preview_id=4249171 ARCADIA — Wearing sunglasses and a bright pink uniform, Keelan Wright was easy to spot when she stepped onto the track at Arcadia High School.

And plenty of eyes remained fixated on the standout junior sprinter from Chaparral High School as she stormed toward the finish line.

Wright swept the girls invitational division sprint titles at the prestigious Arcadia Invitational on Saturday night, claiming the titles in 100 meters and 200 meters behind personal-best times. Wright won the 100 in a wind-legal time of 11.54 seconds, the fastest time in the state this season, and she later completed the sweep by taking the crown in the 200 in a wind-legal time of 23.97 seconds, the No. 3 time in the state.

Wright had to sit out the first 30 days of the season after transferring from Vista Murrieta. Her first meet was the Stanford Invitational on March 29, and Wright won the championship in the 100 meters in 11.61 seconds. Saturday’s two sprint finals did lose a lot of star power when Mia Brahe-Pedersen of Lake Oswego (Oregon) scratched because of injury. Brahe-Pedersen swept the titles at Arcadia last season and won both events at the 2023 Nike Outdoor Nationals. However, the field in 100 meters still included last season’s California state champion.

Niya Clayton of Oaks Christian got out of the blocks fast and grabbed the early lead. But just as she did at the Stanford Invitational, Wright switched into a higher gear at the end and reached the finish line before Mayen Usoro of Arizona’s Cesar Chavez (11.63) and Clayton (11.67).

“Those last 20 meters or so, I just pushed a little bit harder,” Wright said moments after capturing the title in the 100 meters.

“I went into this race a little blind, but being able to win here at Arcadia definitely will give me even more confidence going forward.”

Wright originally was scheduled to run in the seeded division at 200 meters, but she was moved into the invitational race after multiple runners scratched. And Wright had no problems bringing home her second Arcadia Invitational gold medal, as she beat Usoro by 0.22 seconds to win the race.

Rancho Cucamonga stole the show in the boys invitational division sprint relays. Friday evening, the quartet of Jonah Dawson, Rodney Sermons, Jeremiah Brown and Cameron Sermons won the 4 x 200 relay title in a season-best time of 1 minute, 27.48 seconds. And Saturday, Dawson and the Sermons brothers teamed up with Trey Wilson to win the 4 x 100 relay title in a time of 41.32, lowering the squad’s state-leading time by 0.05 seconds.

Rancho Cucamonga won Saturday’s 400 relay by .007 seconds, as Cameron Sermons final lean helped give the Cougars a win over Parkland (Texas).

“I turned my head to the left just a little bit and could see him in my peripheral vision,” Sermons said about Parkland’s anchor runner in Lane 3. “I knew I had to keep pushing to hold him off. I knew I had to time it (the lean) perfectly. If I didn’t, we probably would have lost.”

Vista Murrieta’s Alyssa Alumbres joined her former teammate as the only other Inland athlete to win an invitational division championship. Alumbres won the girls triple jump title with a wind-legal and personal-best leap of 39 feet, 9 3/4 inches, which is the top mark in the state this season.

Mater Dei baseball knocks off No. 1 Corona to win Boras Classic South https://www.sbsun.com/2024/04/05/mater-dei-baseball-knocks-off-no-1-corona-to-win-boras-classic-south/ Sat, 06 Apr 2024 05:38:59 +0000 https://www.sbsun.com/?p=4248022&preview=true&preview_id=4248022 SANTA ANA – Mater Dei’s baseball team won the first Boras Classic South in 2013.

Now 11 years later, the Monarchs have won it again.

They defeated Corona 5-3 on Friday night in the Boras Classic South championship game at Mater Dei High.

Mater Dei (12-6) will play Granite Bay (13-1) in the Boras Classic championship game April 20 at Santa Clara University. Granite Bay won the Boras Classic North title on March 28.

Corona (15-2) entered the game ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division 1 and with a 12-game winning streak.

The Monarchs were trailing 3-0 in the second inning when they turned to sophomore pitcher Jackson Campbell. The bases were loaded and there was one out. The right-hander struck out the first two batters he faced to end the inning.

From there, Campbell gave up two hits and two walks and struck out four more batters — six overall — in 5 2/3 innings.

Campbell said he “had some sort of idea” that he would be called upon to take the mound Friday.

“Just come in and help my team win it in a big tournament,” he said. “Just back my teammates up and do the best I can.”

“Campbell’s a really tough kid,” said Mater Dei coach Richard Mercado. “I knew what we were going to get out of him. He’s a hyper-competitive kid.”

Campbell shared player of the game honors with sophomore left fielder Ezekiel Lara, who was 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI.

Mater Dei won back-to-back 11 inning games, over La Mirada and Huntington Beach, in the tournament to get to the championship game.

The Panthers took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Josh Springer drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly. Junior Billy Carlson, a Vanderbilt commit, doubled to send in the other run.

Corona made it 3-0 in the second inning. Starting pitcher Sam Burgess, a Texas Christian University signee, singled and later scored on a base hit by Brady Ebel.

Mater Dei scored twice in the fourth inning. Lawson Olmstead hit a double to drive in Lara and Dylan Wetzel to trim the lead to 3-2.

The Monarchs took the lead with a three-run fifth inning. Austin Palmares rolled a single through the hole between  first and second base. Brody Connors sent a 3-2 pitch into the gap in right-center field to send home Palmares to tie the game 3-3. Brandon Thomas’ single put Connors on third base.

Lara’s single brought in Connors to give Mater Dei a 4-3 lead and Thomas scored, making it 5-3, on Treson Aritz’s ground out.

Campbell enjoyed splendid fielding support. In the sixth inning, third baseman Brody Connors made a dove to his left to snag Daniel Rivera’s line drive for the inning’s first out. Second baseman Dylan Wetzel then made a backhand grab and a leaping throw to first to get Trey Ebel for the second out.

The Monarchs also turned two double plays, including one for the final two outs of the game.

JSerra and Mater Dei, partnering with The Boras Foundation, have been co-hosts of the Boras Classic South since it started in 2013. With no CIF State champion in baseball, the Boras Classic was conceived to fill that void. It consistently has attracted an outstanding field of state-ranked teams every season.

After winning the first Boras Classic South tournament in 2013 Mater Dei went on to beat Pleasant Grove in the tournament’s overall championship game.

Mater Dei, No. 6 in the Orange County Top 25, returns to Trinity League play Tuesday with a game at St. John Bosco that starts a three-game series with the Braves. The Monarchs are 2-4 in the Trinity League.

Corona is now 1-2 this season against Trinity League teams. Corona beat JSerra 4-1 in a tournament on Feb. 15. Corona lost to Orange Lutheran 4-2 the next day in the same tournament.

Corona is 9-0 in the Big VIII League. The Panthers begin play in the National High School Invitational in North Carolina on Wednesday.

They resume league play with a home game against Centennial on April 15.

Hernandez tossed a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts and also smacked a three-run homer as Corona pulled away for an 8-0 win over Aquinas in a Boras Classic semifinal game Wednesday afternoon at JSerra High School in Rancho Santa Margarita.

Hernandez and Aquinas starter Nate Christman matched zeroes for the first four innings, but Corona finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth. Anthony Murphy and Brady Ebel both singled with one out, and then Hernandez homered to left field.

Corona (14-1) added five more runs in the sixth innings. The Panthers loaded the bases with one out. Murphy singled home the first run, and Ebel doubled home two more to extend the lead to 6-0.. Hernandez registered his fourth RBI of the contest on a sacrifice fly, and Josh Springer capped the big inning with an RBI single.

Hernandez did not walk or hit a batter in the game and faced only one batter over the minimum.

Murphy, Ebel and Springer had two hits apiece for Corona. Estaban Olazaba had both hits in the game for Aquinas (10-7).

Corona will square off against Etiwanda in a semifinal game Thursday at 6 p.m. at JSerra High School.

Aquinas will take on Oaks Christian on Thursday at 3 p.m. at Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana.

ETIWANDA CRUISES TO VICTORY

After winning a 1-0 pitchers’ duel Tuesday, Etiwanda cruised to a 13-2 victory over Oaks Christian at JSerra High School.

Leadoff hitter LJ Roellig reached base safely four times (single, three walks) and scored three runs to spark the offense for the Eagles (6-10). Alvaro Moreno Jr., and Blake Torres each had two RBIs, and Chris Montes de Oca also scored three runs.

Moreno tossed a one-hitter Tuesday, and he got Etiwanda on the board Wednesday with a two-out RBI double in the first.

Oaks Christian’s four pitchers combined to walk eight batters, hit two more batters and throw three wild pitches.

Freshman Michael Aleman picked up the win for Etiwanda, allowing two runs on five hits in five innings of work.

FAVELA TOSSES NO-HITTER FOR SAN DIMAS

Jude Favela tossed a no-hitter and struck out five batters as San Dimas defeated Ganesha 7-0 in a consolation game played at Mater Dei High School.

Favela, who is headed to USC, walked three and hit one batter but did not allow Ganesha (9-3) to score.

San Dimas (15-3) grabbed the lead in the second inning, scoring two runs on an error with two outs. The Saints added to the lead when Jayden Medina singled home a run in the fourth inning. Rocco Regan belted a grand slam in the sixth inning.

San Dimas will face Crespi on Thursday at noon at Mater Dei.

Ganesha will take on Rancho Bernardino on Thursday at 9 a.m. at JSerra.
